Failover events include instances when a primary link failed over (was switched) to a secondary link, and then returned. Cradlepoint defines failover events in two ways:

  • Managed Failover Events: The primary and secondary WAN links are connected to a Cradlepoint endpoint and that endpoint has direct knowledge and control of the state of each link, enabling it to definitively report failover and failback events for each link.

  • Calculated Failover Events: A Cradlepoint endpoint is connect to the primary routing device (for example, a third- party router or a firewall) as a non-primary WAN link. The endpoint has no knowledge nor direct control over the primary WAN link. Cradlepoint monitors the data usage of the endpoint for spikes and slumps of data usage through the endpoint to detect failover events.

The Failover Events and Active Failover Events cards summarize the failover events that have occurred, or are currently occurring, in the account. They allow the monitoring and tracking failover usage and provide data for such tasks as verifying primary ISP service level agreements (SLAs).

The Failover Events card tracks completed failover events for individual endpoints, groups, or the account as a whole, depending upon the occurrence. This feature reports the number of endpoints involved in the failover, the duration spent in failover, and data used during that time frame. The Failover Event card provides the summation of Managed Failover Events and Calculated Failover Events.

The Active Failover Events card lists failover events currently in progress. The information provided on the card is based solely upon Managed Failover Events.

Click either of the failover events cards to open the Failover Events or Active Failover Events pages. Both of these pages contain GeoView maps showing the devices that experienced the failover events. These pages also contain tables listing details about the failover events, such as start and end time, data usage, and router ID.

If using a Cradlepoint adaptor (for example, a CBA850, W2000, or W2005 adapter) and NCOS version 7.2.70 or later, the Failover Events page contains the Managed Events and Calculated Events tabs:

  • The Managed Events tab displays failover events.

  • The Calculated Events tab displays the events that can occur when you power on one of the above-listed adaptor products. The Calculated Events tab provides a view of these events so you can differentiate them from standard failover events. Calculated Events are determined using different metrics than Managed Events.

Note

Under certain conditions, it is possible for a failover event to be correlated with the incorrect failback event. For example, this could happen if multiple failover or failback events occur within 60 seconds of one another.

The Failover Events and Active Failover Events cards on the dashboard will not display data if the account has the Failover feature but no devices are configured for Failover and Failback.

Data regarding the Started Time and Data Usage may not be collected if the secondary WAN interface connects before the primary during a reboot.

If a failover event occurs and the endpoint is powered off, the failover event displays as Active on the Active Failover Events card until the device is powered on and reconnects to NetCloud Manager.
