Use the Traffic Steering Events by Rule and Traffic Steering Flows by Rule cards to view how your traffic-steering rules* are affecting your network traffic.

  • The Traffic Steering Events by Rule card reports changes in the preferred WAN for rules that specify a WAN Performance identity as the target. A high number of steering events may indicate WAN performance issues.

  • The Traffic Steering Flows by Rule card reports the number of flows steered to a preferred and non-preferred WAN by each traffic steering rule. A flow might egress a non-preferred WAN if the preferred WAN changes due to a steering event or if application identification reclassifies a flow. Clicking on a rule will show flow counts per application.

For SD-WAN networks built using auto VPN, flows are actively moved to the preferred WAN so the number of flows egressing the non-preferred WAN should be near zero. For other networks, steering to the preferred WAN is done on a best-effort basis so the ratio of preferred to non-preferred WANs will be lower, but should improve over time for steering rules that specify an application match.

Any flow not matched by a traffic steering rule will display as a non-preferred flow in the None rule. Click either of the cards to drill down for more details on your Traffic Steering events and flows.

See Configuring Traffic Steering for information on configuring traffic steering rules.
