The Availability section contains quick access to WAN-related features. A check box allows users to enable or disable the specific feature. A gear link allows for users to open a configuration screen to that specific feature. A green gear indicates the feature is currently enabled. A gray gear indicates the feature is disabled.

Following are definitions for each column within the Availability section:

Enabled – Check or uncheck the box to enable or disable the WAN Interface/Profile.

Connection Set – Select the gear link to configure Connection Set for the WAN Interface/Profile. See Configuring Connection Sets on an Ericsson Cradlepoint Endpoint for more information.

Default Connection State – Connection State refers to how interfaces using this profile will initially connect. By default, an interface will "connect as needed" as determined by priority, availability, and configuration. Connection options include:

  • Standby – Standby causes the interface to connect as soon as it is ready, but no data is routed to the interface until it becomes active. Standby is used to decrease failover time from one WAN interface to another. Speed tests may be run when the interface is in this mode.

    • When Standby is enabled for a WAN profile or interface, the relevant interfaces are kept in a connected- but-idle (minimal, non-routed traffic) state. When the current WAN connection is disrupted, the traffic will failover to the next priority WAN. If that interface is on Standby, the connection is already established, and failover will take much less time.

    • The current connected interfaces are indicated by a green connection state. For the interfaces on Standby, the interface is indicated by a yellow connection state. If the interface is indicated in red, the interface is not currently connected or in Standby.

      Note

      Standby is used to enable faster failover times only. Use WAN Affinity to manage traffic to a specific WAN interface. If WAN Affinity is enabled for a particular profile or interface, do not enable Standby for that profile or interface as the failover results may vary and be unexpected.

  • Always On – Always On connects the interface and leaves it connected. The interface is considered active, and data may be routed to the interface at any time based on routing and firewall policies.

  • Connect as Needed – The interface is not connected, and routing traffic to the interface is impossible. The interface must first be connected before running a speed test. See Configuring the Default Connection State for a Cradlepoint Router for more information.

On Demand – Select the gear link to configure On Demand. On Demand mode is mostly used for conserving data usage on your cellular plan. When On Demand is used, the modem remains disconnected until a LAN client attempts to access the internet.

WAN Verify – Select the gear link to configure WAN Verify. WAN Verify allows the router to actively verify the status of its WAN interfaces, which leads to a quicker resolution of a problem if one is found. See Configuring WAN Verify for more information.

Failback – Select the gear link to configure Failback. From here you can configure how the WAN interface fails back to a WAN interface of higher priority if the higher priority interface has or regains its connection to the network. Configuring Failover and Failback for more information.

Data Usage – Select the gear link to configure rules to track the amount of traffic used by the interface. This is useful for a cellular broadband connection with a data cap. Data Usage rules help to prevent data overage charges.

Smart Disconnect – Select the gear link to configure Smart Disconnect. From here you can configure Smart Disconnect for the WAN Interface/Profile. Smart Disconnect provides a more graceful closure of connections when the router is switching to a new interface. New data connections will use the new interface, but existing connections may continue on this interface for a given time period, or until the data slows to a given rate for a period.
