- What does the local domain setting in System > Administration > Local Management do?
- Should I set the local domain setting on my Cradlepoint router?
- The local domain is used as the suffix for DNS entries of local hosts. This is tied to the hostnames of DHCP clients as DHCP_HOSTNAME.LOCAL_DOMAIN.
- Configuring a local domain will make the Cradlepoint the Authoritative Name Server for the specified domain. The Cradlepoint will only look to itself to resolve hostnames in its local domain. This can create issues if the Cradlepoint is the primary DNS server for clients or if the Cradlepoint is intercepting DNS requests. For example:
- Cradlepoint is configured with local domain "mybiz.net" and "Force All DNS requests To Router". Connected client "client.mybiz.net" tries to reach "server.mybiz.net". The Cradlepoint intercepts the DNS request and checks if server.mybiz.net is in the Cradlepoint's local host file, If it is not, the Cradlepoint returns "NXDOMAIN" to client.mybiz.net.
- Local Domain can be configured by navigating to System > Administration > Local Management
